Charleston, South Carolina is one of our all-time favorite cities—and this summer, we had the joy of photographing a beautiful wedding there before turning the trip into a romantic Charleston getaway for just the two of us. After the wedding, we stayed an extra three days in downtown Charleston. No kids. No schedule. Just time to reconnect, recharge, and explore a city we love.


We ate incredible food, slept through the night without newborn cries (hallelujah), went to the beach, and most importantly—enjoyed uninterrupted time together. One of the highlights of our trip? A spontaneous Charleston photo walk through the historic district.

Why We Love Photo Walks as a Couple


As photographers, it’s no surprise that TJ and I love taking pictures. But when we shoot for fun, we’re drawn to three genres: landscape, street, and architectural photography. Photo walks have become one of our favorite low-key, creative date ideas, and Charleston—with its iconic buildings, pastel facades, cobblestone alleys, and scenic views—was the perfect backdrop.


We started our walk on Queen Street and strolled down toward Waterfront Park Pier, capturing beautiful architecture and charming street corners as we went. The soft golden hour faded into blue hour, and by the time we reached the pier, it was fully dark outside. But the iPhone 16 Pro Max came through in a big way—no flash needed! It took stunning night shots of the bay.


Pro Tip: You don’t need an expensive camera to take great photos. Modern smartphones are more than capable of capturing professional-quality images—especially at night!

A Charleston Night Walk to Remember


Though it was humid (as Charleston often is in the summer), a cool breeze drifted off the water. We paused to sit for a while and take it all in. The pier was surprisingly busy—lots of people were out fishing in the dark, which made it feel less eerie and more alive. (I’m not a big fan of empty places at night, even with TJ nearby!)


From the pier, we wandered through Waterfront Park, then up Concord Street to East Bay Street, and eventually made our way back to Queen Street and the car park. There were so many beautiful spots to stop and take photos, and by the time we returned, I had literal blisters from starting and stopping so much—but I didn’t mind one bit.


This ended up being one of my favorite dates ever, and I love that we’re still creating those moments together after 12 years of marriage. I can’t wait to do another photo walk in a new city sometime soon—maybe Savannah, Boston, or even somewhere abroad!

Photo Walks: The Perfect Charleston Date Idea


If you’re planning a romantic weekend in Charleston, I highly recommend adding a photo walk to your itinerary. It’s slow, creative, and gives you an entirely new way to experience the city together. Whether you use a DSLR, film camera, or just your phone, you’ll come away with both memories and beautiful images.
