Let's be real — figuring out what your child should wear for photos can feel overwhelming. You want them to look cute, coordinated, and clean (please, just stay clean for five minutes), but also still look like their cute little selves.
Good news: I've got you covered. Here's a list of outfit tips that will help your kids look amazing in portraits — without forcing anyone into an itchy sweater or stiff pants they hate.
1) stick to soft, neutral colors
Think creams, soft blues, warm grays, blush pinks, or sage greens. These tones photograph beautifully, flatter most skin tones, and let your child's expression take center stage—not their loud plaid shirt.
2) avoid logos, cartoons, and super bold prints
I know, I know — that Fortnite hoodie is their entire personality right now. But logos and loud graphics can distract from your child's face in photos. Save the superhero cape for after the session.
3) layers = style + Flexibility
Light cardigans, denim jackets, or textured sweaters add visual interest and give us styling options during the session (Also: great for hiding snacks, dirt or mystery stains if needed. Real talk).
4) go for comfort. always.
If they're itchy, stiff, or tugging at something the whole time, it will show in the photos. Choose outfits they can move in, sit in, and maybe even run in — because we're going to let them be themselves.
5) barefoot can be so cute
Depending on the location and vibe, bare feet can be adorable and totally appropriate — especially for toddlers or indoor studio sessions.
6) Add a touch of texture
Ruffles, knits, linen, denim, buttons, and embroidery — subtle textures make portraits pop and look more high-end. Just don't go full-on fringe cowboy suit unless that's your vibe (in which case, please call me).
7) coordinate with siblings (without matching)
You don't need to dress your kids like a tiny choir. Instead, pick a color palette (say: dusty blue, tan, and ivory) and mix different textures and tones from that same family. It looks polished, but still effortless.
8) Let their personality shine
A favorite accessory, a beloved pair of boots, or even a wild curl they refuse to brush — these little things capture who your child really is right now. And those are details you'll want to remember.
9) consider the season and location
- For outdoor spring/summer sessions: light cottons, flowy dresses, rolled sleeves
- For fall: warm tones, boots, knits, cozy layers
- For indoor or studio: neutral outfits with soft textures and bare feet can work beautifully

10) when in doubt, keep it simple
The goal is timeless, not trendy. If you're stuck between two outfits, go with the one that makes them look like them — with just a little extra polish.
Bonus tip: don't stress too much
Seriously, I've photographed wild toddlers in mismatched socks and shy kids who refused to take off their hoodie. One of my favorite portraits of mu own son, he has one boot on and one boot off. It's all about your child's personality, not a picture-perfect outfit.
